How to Stop Your Washing Machine From Shaking and Making Noise

Is your washer walking across the floor or sounding like a jet engine? Most shaking and noise problems are easy to fix. Here’s what to check.

1. The Machine Is Not Level

The Problem: This is the #1 cause of shaking. If all 4 feet aren’t touching the floor evenly, the drum gets off-balance during the spin cycle.

The Fix:

• Use a bubble level on top of the washer
• Turn the adjustable feet clockwise or counter-clockwise to level it
• Once level, tighten the lock nuts to keep them in place

2. Unbalanced Load

The Problem: Washing one heavy item like a comforter or too many clothes on one side throws the drum off balance.

The Fix:

• Mix large and small items in each load
• Don’t overload or underload the machine
• Pause the cycle, redistribute clothes evenly, and restart

3. Transit Bolts Still Installed

The Problem: New washers come with bolts in the back to hold the drum during shipping. If you forgot to remove them, the machine will shake violently.

The Fix: Unplug the machine and remove all transit bolts from the back panel. Check your manual for location. This must be done before first use.

4. Worn Out Shock Absorbers or Springs

The Problem: Front-load washers use shock absorbers and springs to keep the drum stable. Over time they wear out and cause banging.

Signs: Loud banging during spin, drum feels loose when you push it.

The Fix: This requires a certified technician to replace the worn parts.

5. Loose Parts or Foreign Objects

The Problem: Coins, bra wires, or screws can get stuck in the drum or pump. Loose panels can also rattle.

The Fix:

• Check pockets before washing
• Use a mesh laundry bag for small items
• Tighten any loose exterior panels and screws

Call a professional if you hear grinding, squealing, or if the drum doesn’t spin smoothly by hand. It could be a bad bearing, motor coupling, or drive belt.
